Cricket lntroduced In Irvine, California Middle School

The Orange County Youth Cricket Association delivered an American Cricket Champ set to Sierra Vista Middle School on October 14, and provided basic instruction on how to play. After the training, two PE classes, with about seventy five students each, played a limited-over match. Enthusiasm among the students and PE teachers was commendable.

The students displayed great skill on their very first day, hitting sixes, getting run-outs and making difficult catches.

One of the PE teachers, Neal Caldwell, has his own website and video of the cricket demonstration has been posted there. Students in this school will also benefit by having a PE teacher originally from Australia.

This is the fifth school in Orange County where cricket is now played. Shantha Suraweera, President of OCCA, coordinated the demonstration, while Dasith Waravitage, a high school student who participated for the SWR in the national U-17 cricket championship, OCCA Past President Abid Hussain, and Manjula Waravitage, captain of the OC Lions Cricket team, helped to make this event a success.
