Received from USYCA Affiliate Orange County Youth Cricket Association:
Orange County Cricket Association successfully completed its first cricket program for youth, “Cricket Module 1,” intended for youth with no or very little experience in playing cricket. The training sessions began on April 25 and ran for six Sundays from 9.00-11.00 AM. Over 20 boys and girls ages 5-12 signed up to learn the basics of cricket, and each session ended with a cricket match, which was the highlight for the participants.
Each training session was conducted by certified coaches and assisted by parents. OCCA has five certified coaches committed to expanding and assisting in “Cricket Module 2” training along with continuing “Module 1” for newcomers. The committee also included three team mothers who will participate in creating the program along coaching staff.
On June 8, the final day of the coaching session, participants were awarded certificate of completion/participation by Scott Voigts, Lake Forest City councilman and the chief guest at the closing ceremony. Voigts commended the remarkable work done by the youth committee and coaches for their commitment and steadfastness in driving the program.
Certified coaches Tiran Mendis, Priyanga De Silva, Michael Voss, Aruna Senanayake and Shantha Suraweera led the coaching sessions and games for the youth, while Beulah Pidakala, the Youth Committee Coordinator, along with Team mum, Varsha, evaluated and assigned certificates to qualified youth. Voigts and Shantha signed the certificates.
The ceremony ended with a fun pizza lunch for the kids, parents and everyone gathered.
Introductory training sessions were offered free of charge, sponsored by Orange County Cricket Association.
