The Orange County (CA) Youth Cricket Association delivered its second USYCA American Cricket Champ kit to Tamura Elementary School in Fountain Valley on April 5. Physical Education staff, led by Daryl Osborne, and students received information from OCYCA staff about cricket and the playing instructions necessary to implement cricket into the school's PE program. It was a very pleasant outing with a lot of enthusiasm and interest from students.
Students participated in a 10-over cricket match, which was their first experience playing cricket. Having gone through the scoring of fours, taking singles, a few run out and one catch, they quickly got the hang of the game, and were careful running between wickets, learning to carry the bat when crossing between wickets.
PE staff told OCYCA that they will integrate cricket into their curriculum and will keep OCYCA informed regarding their progress.
OCCA President Shantha Suraweera conducted the demonstration. There are five more schools in the area that have shown interest in this program; another demonstration is scheduled on April 20 at Anaheim Elementary School.
